I awaken from a dreamless sleep coughing, or at least trying to.
My skin feels hot and tingly. Not in the usual way that happens when my powers manifest themselves. No, this is stifling.
The hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention, as though a cool breeze had blown across me, freezing the skin it grazed.
I try to open my eyes, but they are glued together. Why can I not see?
My mouth feels full, and I cannot hear or breathe. I finally force my eyes open, but I cannot see my Branor.
Crawling on hands and knees, I make it to a rock pool and stare at my reflection in the water. My eyes are wide and red, but that is not what concerns me.
A thick black moving mass emerges from my mouth and ears and my heart leaps into my throat.
What on earth?
The mass moves, separating into hundreds of smaller blobs. From my reflection alone, I cannot make out what is happening. I kneel and bring my hands to my mouth, grasping at whatever is there.
When I open my hands, dozens of thick bodied black spiders with long spindly legs crawl over my fingers and across my body.
More pour out of my ears and mouth, swarming me in their hundreds.
I stand, gasping for breath, clawing at every inch of myself in a desperate attempt to pull them off. Shivers course through me at the feel of their legs whispering over my skin.
Thousands of legs touching me, creeping over every inch, spreading out.
The desire to rip my skin from my body is overwhelming. My lungs burn as I try to scream, but no sound comes out.
I stumble towards Branor, desperately trying to call his name. Collapsing at his side, I reach out and shake him until he stirs.
âBirdie?â My heart thuds in my chest at the sound of his sleep filled voice.
I heard him!
Glancing down, I realise the spiders have disappeared. Not one remains on either me or the floor. They could not have just crawled away as though they were never here. Where are they?
I felt them, I saw them, I know I did. I am not crazy, am I?
I do not hear Branor calling my name until he touches my shoulder. My panicked gaze meets his.
He sits upright and reaches his other arm out to me. âBirdie? Are you okay? What are you looking for?â
I place my hand in his, and he pulls me onto his lap. With a rough palm he smooths my hair and cradles me close. I dig my fingers into his shirt to know that he is real, that I am not dreaming.
âIt must have been a nightmare. I was . . . I was seeing things.â
I meet his gaze. Green eyes stare back, filled with affection, as he smiles, placing a gentle kiss to my forehead. âThere is nothing to worry about. You are safe with me, my sweet Birdie.â
He leans back against the cave wall, and cocoons his arms around me as I snuggle into his chest.
